Three operations recognized for exceptional performance
Three aggregate sites received the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association’s (NSSGA) highest operational honor — the Star of Excellence Award. To receive the award, a site must have received at least two of the association’s top awards for community relations, safety and health, or environment during a five-year period. Each of the three recipients received the Two Star Award.
Cemex’s Center Hill Mine, in Center Hill, Fla., was recognized with stars of excellence in environmental and community relations. The site hosts the Sumter County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Group, which allows business leaders to visit the site and ask questions. It also hosts day-long field trips, which are available to all schools in the county. In addition, it hosts an annual Earth Day event for the public, which draws nearly 1,000 people each year.
Granite Construction Co.’s Cottonwood Facility, in Salt Lake City, Utah, was recognized with stars of excellence in environmental and community relations. The urban operation is the only construction materials facility to be an active partner in Clean Utah. It has bag houses for the conveyor drop points on the jaw crusher, horizontal shaft impactor, and a cone crusher. It also has a tent capture system on a VSI to reduce fugitive dust.
Rogers Group, Inc.’s Lacey’s Spring Quarry in Lacey’s Spring, Ala., hosts a special customer/neighbor appreciation event, bringing in neighbors, customers, politicians, and community association board of directors for a barbeque. The community has a low per capita income, so as a youth sports complex was built, the site donated stone for the parking lot and pays the ongoing landscape maintenance fees. It also donated stone for ground cover.
