As the year draws to a close, consider a new year’s resolution regarding safe operations during 2014. Safe work practices not only protect workers, but also your bottom line.
Below is a list of the top 10 citations issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) during 2013. Citations are sorted by sand and gravel and crushed stone operations and apply to surface operations only.

It’s worth noting the sharp nosedive in citations issued for guarding violations. In 2010, 1,325 citations were issued to surface stone, sand and gravel operations. In 2013, that number decreased by 500 citations, with 825 citations being issued through mid-December.
Moving machine parts continues to be a highly cited issue in both sand and gravel and stone operations, taking the top spot in each category.
