Trucks transport 60.7 percent of trans-border freight in June

Screen Shot 2013-08-28 at 6.00.47 PM [1]Trucks carried 60.7 percent of the $93.5 billion of freight moved in June between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners, Canada and Mexico, according to data released last week from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

The data show that trucks carried 56.0 percent of the $52.7 billion of freight between Canada and the U.S., while 66.8 percent of the $40.8 billion of freight between Mexico and the U.S. was transported by trucks.

Other freight flows with Canada included 16.8 percent by rail, 10.8 percent by pipeline, 5.5 percent by vessel, and 4.5 percent by air. Total surface transportation carried 83.7 percent of all freight between the U.S. and Canada.

Freight flows with Mexico included 14.5 percent by rail, 11.7 percent by vessel, 3.2 percent by air and 0.9 percent by pipeline. Total surface transportation carried 82.1 percent of total freight between the U.S. and Mexico.

The amount of trans-border freight carried by trucks decreased 5.3 percent since May [2].

The value of goods moving between the U.S. and its NAFTA partners via surface transportation declined by 1.0 percent over June 2012.
