Virginia Tech student chapter wins SME student membership challenge

SME logoThe Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) has announced that the SME student chapter of Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University won its 2013 student membership challenge with 114 total members.

The SME Student Chapter Fall Membership Challenge is an annual membership contest between SME student chapters that encourages student members to recruit new members to their chapter.

The Virginia Tech student chapter recruited 50 new and 64 renewed members in 2013.

SME also awarded cash prizes to schools with high percentages of membership growth as well as those that recruited 25 or more student members.

The schools with the highest percentages are:

  • South Dakota School of Mines & Tech

  • University of Arizona

  • West Virginia University

The schools with 25 or more new recruits are:

  • Missouri University of Science and Technology

  • South Dakota School of Mines & Tech

  • University of Arizona

  • University of Kentucky

  • University of Nevada-Reno

  • Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University

The contest brought in a total of 414 new student members and 375 renewals from 24 student chapters.
