Two bills aimed at blocking rock quarries from opening near Gurley, Alabama, have stalled in the legislature, according to WAAY-TV [2].

One of those bills–House bill 230–would stop Vulcan Materials from opening a quarry on Highway 72 near Madison County Elementary and Madison County High School.

The House classified the bill as environmental, and it cannot be presented as local legislation.

Representative Wayne Johnson (R-AL) sponsored the house bill. The senate version of the bill–Senate bill 457–was sponsored by Senator Shadrack McGill (R-AL).

Johnson said he has not decided whether to re-file the bill next session.
