Fatal Accidents Alert: Two deadly accidents occur in restricted areas of mines; miners were alone

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has issued a Fatal Accidents Alert following two deadly accidents involving miners that entered restricted areas that were deemed hazardous and were alone. On January 25, 2017, a miner in an underground limestone mine failed to exit the mine at the end of his shift and was found buried under material that had fallen on him from a rib in an area of the mine that had been barricaded to prevent entry due to bad roof and rib conditions.

A second accident occurred on January 26, 2017, in a coal mine. When the miner failed to exit the mine at the end of his shift, he and was discovered entangled at a conveyor belt drive.
