Great Lakes limestone shipments see double-digit increase in September 2017

Lake Carriers Association logoThe Lake Carriers’ Association reports that limestone shipments on the Great Lakes in September 2017 totaled 3.5 million tons, an increase of 17.5 percent when compared to September 2016 and 5.5 percent more than the five-year average for September. United States quarries shipped 2.9 million tons of limestone, an increase of almost 15 percent when compared to September 2016. Canadian quarries shipped a total of 609,000 tons of limestone, an increase of almost 32 percent when compared to September 2016.

Year-to-date the Great Lakes limestone trade stands at 20.1 million tons for 2017, an increase of 3.3 percent when compared to 2016. Michigan and Ohio quarries shipped a total of 16.5 million tons of limestone, an increase of 5.3 percent when compared to 2016, while limestone shipments from Ontario quarries decreased by 4.9 percent to a total of 3.6 million tons.
