The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued a Close Call Accident Alert after a loader was struck by a train. On July 24, 2017, a front-end loader was crossing the railroad tracks when it was hit by a train. Luckily, the miner was uninjured, and the front-end loader remained upright.
MSHA offers the following Best Practices to help prevent this type of accident:
- Install signage and warning devices to alert miners of approaching locomotives at road crossings or other high traffic areas.
- Designate safe areas where equipment can be operated or parked near train tracks and crossings.
- Always yield to an oncoming locomotive. Never try to “beat the train.” Review procedures to ensure all possible hazards have been identified and appropriate controls are in place to protect persons.
- Stay in a safe location where you are not exposed to hazards when working near moving locomotives.
