A man died over the weekend after he drowned in an a quarry lake in Michigan.

Richard Buikema was found on the shore of the lake in the Marne area unconscious at noon July 10, according to WZZM in Grad Rapids.

Investigators from Ottawa County said the man was out on the gravel pit-turned-lake in a small aluminum boat fishing with a friend, as he does twice a year in the area. Buikema tried to stand up but accidentally caused the boat to capsize. He and his friend were both sent in to the water.

The two began to attempt to swim to the shore, but Buikema stopped responding when he was just 15 feet from the shore. The friend carried Buikema to shore and attempted to revive him. He remained unresponsive after the emergency crews were on the scene.

There were life jackets in the boat, but neither Buikema nor his friend was wearing one when the boat tipped over.
