Metal and nonmetal mines get a total of 61 citations during August MSHA inspections

MSHA_logo_HardHatThe Mine Safety and Health Administration handed out 61 citations to six different mines during August inspections.

MSHA announced that it inspected seven metal and nonmetal mines in August, and all but one received at least a minor citation. The sole operation inspected that wasn’t issued a single citation was MDU Resources Group’s Knife River Construction Vernalis Plant in California.

MSHA issued 25 serious and substantial citations during the inspections at mines in Virginia, Arizona, Missouri, Florida, Nevada, California and Wisconsin. The Doe Run Company’s Buick Mine/Mill in Missouri, controlled by Renco Group had the most total citations at 26, as well as the most classified as serious and substantial with 12.

  • Newmont Mining USA’s Leeville Mine in Nevada: 22 citations (7 serious and substantial)
  • R&R Wash Materials Inc’s Portable Plant #2 in Wisconsin (controlled by Shirley Washkovic): 5 citations (1 serious and substantial)
  • Freeport-McMoRan Morenci’s mine of the same name in Arizona: 4 citations (3 serious and substantial)
  • PCS Phosphate-White Springs’ Swift Creek Mine in Florida (controlled by Potash Corp of Saskatchewan): 3 citations (1 serious and substantial)
  • Luck Stone Corp-Leesburg’s Leesburg Plant in Virginia (controlled by Charles S. Luck IV): 1 citation (1 serious and substantial)
  • MDU Resources Group’s Knive River Construction Vernalis Plant in California: 0 citations
