NSSGA announces Stars of Excellence and environmental awards

The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) announced the recipients of the 2017 Environmental Excellence, Stars of Excellence, and Environmental Leadership awards, which recognize aggregates operations for their commitment to safe environmental practices. The awards will be presented during NSSGA’s Legislative & Policy Forum/Fall Board Meeting in Washington, D.C., Sept. 24-28.

“I am proud to congratulate these award recipients, as they continue to make an outstanding difference in our industry by fostering environmental stewardship and leading innovative sustainability practices at their facilities,” said Michael W. Johnson, NSSGA president and CEO.

National Stars of Excellence Award goes to operations that accumulate multiple Gold Awards in Safety, Environmental, and Community Relations Excellence over a five-year period.

  • Center Hill Mine; Cemex; Center Hill, Fla. — 2012 Community Relations Gold Award and 2016 Environmental Gold Award.

Environmental Excellence Award recognizes the top 10 percent of aggregate producers that go above and beyond technical, environmental, and regulatory requirements and receive the highest score from independent judges. The following facilities received Gold awards:

  • Center Hill Mine; Cemex; Center Hill, Fla.
  • Empire Sand & Gravel; LafargeHolcim; Eagan, Mich.
  • FEC Quarry; Cemex; Medley, Fla.
  • Gurley Quarry; Vulcan Materials; Gurley, Ala.
  • Central Rock Quarry; Martin Marietta; Charlotte, N.C.
  • Mill Creek Limestone; Martin Marietta; Mill Creek, Okla.
  • Thaddus Carr Dredge; Hanson Aggregates; Coraopolis, Pa.

Environmental Leadership Award recognizes an individual who has made substantial contributions to their company’s or industry’s efforts to achieve environmentally sound operating practices.

  • Joe McGuire, Ph.D., of Cessford Construction Co., a division of Oldcastle Materials Inc. McGuire has shown great leadership in the industry through environmental permitting and ongoing environmental compliance. He has presented more than 100 seminars on environmental matters and has worked with associations and their member companies to help them understand environmental rules, regulations, and compliance. He has also been heavily involved in providing environmental education for employees at his company.
