With a vote of 52 for and 46 against, the U.S. Senate confirmed David Zatezalo as the next Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) on Nov. 15, 2017. According to the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA), during his confirmation process, Zatezalo told the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) that he would seek more consistent enforcement from agency officials and improved use of technology to boost safety and focus on “safer mining and health behaviors.”

The NSSGA says it is looking forward to working with Zatezalo and continuing to educate administration officials at MSHA on the aggregates industry’s commitment to safety.

In the video below, Zatezalo notes his interest in re-establishing the Small Mines Office and promoting technology in mining.
